Colorado Springs birth photography, Fort Carson birth photographer

Penelope Terry | Colorado Springs Birth Photography

March 27, 2014

Let me start by saying that I don’t offer birth sessions for just anyone. It’s definitely a labor of love for me, but it’s definitely a lot of hours and a lot of emotions (and not a lot of sleep, haha!). This Colorado Springs birth session was done at Evans Army Hospital on Fort Carson, and it was probably the most beautiful and rewarding thing I’ve ever been able to witness. Watching my best friend, Missee, be so brave while her husband Matt is deployed overseas has been nothing short of inspiring; I am so proud of her as a friend, a military wife and now a mommy. Missee and Matt are two of the most amazing people we know – maybe you remember their video when we surprised Matt with the news he was going to be a Daddy or Missee’s beautiful winter maternity session – and I feel so blessed to have been invited to document one of the most special days in their lives.

Missee’s water broke about 8:45 on Monday night, right as she was getting ready to eat dinner with her family. Angie, Missee’s mom, told me that her eyes just got really big and everyone immediately knew what happened (I am SO bummed I didn’t get to see this reaction, I can only imagine how priceless it was!). I got a text a few minutes later with “I’ve got some exciting news...” but of course I was already in bed, so Missee called Randy to let me know it was about that time! After they came and picked me up, we went down to Evans and Missee got all hooked up and checked by about 11pm … and she was only 1cm (not surprising), so we knew we were in for a long night. It was so great to be able to help coach her, it would be so awesome to be able to be a doula or a midwife if I had the extra time.

I can’t even imagine how Matt was feeling – I know when Randy missed Noah’s birth due to deployment back in 2009, it was very hard on him – so I wanted to make sure I did everything in my power to ensure that every moment of Missee’s labor and delivery was beautifully documented just in case Matt was out on a mission and unable to see his baby girl be welcomed into the world. Luckily, Matt is deployed to a location overseas that has access to the internet, so we were able to Skype with him for 95% of Missee’s labor and delivery (the poor guy had to eat at some point, right?). He was right by Missee’s side the entire time, whispering how much he loved her, how proud he was, how he knew how strong she was – he was there throughout it all.

Missee was an absolute rock star in there. She labored for about 9 hours without getting the epidural, and pushed for hardly 15 minutes before Miss Penelope Terry came into this world with the softest little angel cries I’ve ever heard. She immediately stole my heart, and filled all of our lives with love and joy. She came in at 7 pounds, 2 ounces and 20 inches long (and the cutest little monkey toes I’ve ever seen). Congratulations Matt and Missee on your beautiful daughter, and to the Gorman and Miller families on this precious gift from above.

xoxo
