Ashley's Advice | Photogs :: learn to l-o-v-e your reflector!

April 28, 2013

So, yesterday I took Jasmine Star’s advice about Using a Reflector in Photography and I can honestly tell you – my life is forever changed for the better. I’ve always shot at “golden hour” – I’m comfortable there and I’ve definitely gotten some of my most amazing shots ever during that wonderful hour right around sunset.

Until yesterday.

You see, sometimes brides don’t think about golden hour when booking their venue. Sometimes they don’t realize that shooting at mid day is the worst possible time, because we can’t get uniform light and there can be whacky shadows. And that’s okay! It’s our job as professionals to work with our clients and if the wedding is in the middle of the day – that’s no excuse to not get amazing shots. At yesterday’s wedding, this was my challenge :: the get amazing shots when the sun was pretty much right above our heads. After reading Jasmine’s blog, I decided to take her advice to heart and bust out my reflector. And what a difference it can make! I had my lead second shooter, Amy, hold the reflector for me and the images are stunning.

Mind = BLOWN.

These images were taken at the same time of the day, about 5 minutes apart. The one on the left is without a reflector and the one on the right has some super yummy reflector deliciousness. If you notice, the sky isn’t nearly as blown out, there is no whacky dark shadows, there is no squinting eyes – it’s just awesome. And would you look at Heather’s dress? It looks gorgeous thanks to the reflector bouncing natural light onto it! Their skin tone is much more uniform, too!

Until next time!

xoxo

    Those reflector shots look amazing! I’ve been contemplating on bringing my reflector with me to weddings more often and I THINK this may push me over the edge to do it 🙂
