Our Family Adventure to Comic Con Palm Springs 2016

August 29, 2016

For the last few years, we’ve wanted to go to the big Comic Con down in San Diego. I had never even heard of it until the Twilight Saga craze started while we were living in Japan, and of course – we couldn’t go because we were half a world away. And now it’s damn near impossible to get tickets to it, because it’s gotten so big – you have to jump through all sorts of hoops to get tickets, and know a guy, and maybe donate your soul to the Empire to be able to get tickets.

We aren’t huge comic book readers, but we do love the movies + TV shows from Marvel + DC (and our boys LOVE Star Wars). So when we heard about the first ever Comic Con Palm Springs that was going down the last weekend of August, we jumped on getting the tickets because we definitely didn’t want to miss out on the fun, and the opportunity to meet some of our favorite characters.

To say it was “a little crazy” would be a bit of an understatement. Now, let us say that it was probably a fraction of the craziness of the San Diego Comic Con – but for us, it was certainly one hell of a first experience into the Comic Con universe. People were dressed up like every character imaginable (and some we couldn’t quite figure out – still have no idea what about a fourth of the people were dressed up as!), and there were all kinds of artists selling their artwork – including a friend of mine from high school (hey Kizzy!!). It was unbelievable how talented some of these artists were!

Some of the cosplayers were pretty awesome – Sierra loved meeting Jake from Avatar (although she had no idea who he was – I think she just thought he was cute – sorry, Randy!), and Deadpool, and my personal fave – Star Lord from Guardians of the Galaxy (although lets be honest, I wish it had been Chris Pratt).

There were also a few celebrities there, which was pretty neat – Sam L Jones (the guy who played Flash Gordon), another actor named James Fong who has been in a bunch of kung fu movies (although I only recognized him from Charmed and Kung Fu Panda, haha) and Lou Ferrigno (the original Incredible Hulk). We kind of snapped pictures as we walked by, but didn’t wait in line or anything (because we weren’t about to pay $40+ for an autograph – what is THAT about?).

The kids, however, were most excited to meet Cameron Jebo – one of the actors from one of the many renditions of Power Rangers as well as Austin + Ally. He was such a nice guy – he talked with them about his adventures on the show, listening to them to tell him about everything he did – and he was so sweet and patient with our overly-excited kids.

And us? Well. We’re late 80s/90s kids. We waited half an hour to meet the Ninja Turtles, hahaha!!!!! But uh, since when is there a girl/pink Ninja Turtle? She wasn’t in our picture, but she was floating around the area.

All in all, we had a really good time having fun at Comic Con Palm Springs!! The kids had a really good time, too – and we can’t wait for our next Comic Con adventure!!
