How to Plan a Pinterest Wedding

December 9, 2015

Good morning and happy Wedding Wednesday guys!! Today’s blog has been on my mind for a really long time, because over the last few years one thing has become very true: Pinterest can be your best friend or your worst enemy. It can be a major time-suck (I personally will jump on Pinterest on my phone whenever I’m sitting in car-line at school pick-up, or at a doctor’s office, or anywhere else I have time to kill and just wait). But! It’s an amazing tool for gathering ideas in a visual format, which is why it’s so easy to plan a Pinterest wedding! So that’s what we’re going to chat about today:

How to Plan a Pinterest Wedding

Almost all of our weddings have some “Pinspiration” involved – maybe only one or two this year didn’t utilize Pinterest in some way. We LOVE when our brides + grooms have Pinterest, because it gives as an idea of what they’re looking for in terms of the overall look or theme to the wedding, flower ideas, attire, tablescapes, important moments or special pose ideas to be captured, etc.

True Story:

At the first wedding Randy + I ever shot together, our bride (heyyy Cheryl!) had this fantastic Pinterest board filled with all of her wedding ideas. She had all her DIY stuff pinned, wedding photos she just loved, fun ideas for the reception, et cetera. And while stalking checking out her Pinterest board, I noticed she had this same type of pose pinned half a dozen times – just a simple shot of the groom kissing the bride on the forehead or side of her hair. Now even with her requested shots list, THAT particular pose wasn’t on there BUT we knew she wanted it because why else would she have pinned it so many times in multiple variations?

And guess what? We shot that pose real quick during their private formals, and it ended up being her one of her favorite photos of the two of them from their wedding day.

But. Let’s be honest: sometimes … okay, almost always … it’s easy to get sucked into planning a Pinterest wedding that could end up costing you an arm and a leg, and simply overwhelming you. Amanda, a RAD bride who got married to Matt earlier this summer in Big Bear in a Fairytale-inspired peaches-and-yellow wedding, had great advice for anyone who is going to plan a Pinterest wedding. She said, “I think it’s easy to find a million little things that you want to include in your wedding, but really a few small touches are all you need. It’s also easy to feel overwhelmed by looking at these fabulous weddings on Pinterest. Keep in mind that your own wedding is the most beautiful of all, regardless of the number of DIY touches, dramatic floral arrangements, or over-the-top lighting.”

And that’s the key: Let Pinterest be INSPIRATION and not GOALS.

Another of our brides, Lexie – who got married to Jason just a few weeks ago at Spencer’s Restaurant in Palm Springs, used Pinterest to help coordinate her ideas with her bridesmaids and vendors. She said, “the things I found most helpful were colors for my bridesmaids dresses, flowers, and hair/makeup ideas. Since I let my bridesmaids pick their own dresses it was helpful to pin some examples to give them ideas. And for flowers it helped get the right size/shape and colors for the bouquets. I was also able to give my Pinterest board link to my florist which considering I was planning a destination wedding and couldn’t go pick out flowers in person was super helpful.”

We absolutely loved Lexie and Jason’s Palm Springs glam wedding: it was clearly well-designed and executed, with gold-shimmery dresses and various shades of pink for the floral, and the reception atmosphere was beautifully pin-spired (and simple and romantic: our favorite!). The gold and pink color palette just made our hearts go pitter-patter!

Alexis, another one of our brides who got married to Justin at their Bohemian-pinspired wedding at Sparrows Lodge in Palm Springs this fall, used Pinterest specifically so she had a place to keep all her ideas in one place so she could focus on what she really wanted, what she could do DIY, and her ultimate wedding vision.

I had never used Pinterest until I was planning my wedding. My matron of honor suggested it. It can be a deep hole of endless browsing….. but I also got some great info and ideas on there. From hair and dresses to napkins and DIY! It helped me hone in what I really wanted and the best part was I was able to share with my wedding planner so they could SEE what what my vision was. Our wedding was perfection and I couldnt have been happier with everything that made it so special.

Justin + Alexis’ wedding was absolutely stunning – easily one of our favorite looks this entire year! Everything was centered around love birds, organic and earthy, with a touch of Bohemian Glam.

What do all three of these weddings have in common?

They used Pinterest as a tool, and not as goals.

Don’t let Pinterest overwhelm you – search what you’re looking for, but only Pin what you truly love.

So, here are our top tips for you if you’re going to plan a Pinterest wedding:

  • Pin what you love about weddings you find on there, and be sure to write in the caption WHY you love the photo (the flowers? the pose? the atmosphere?).
  • Be realistic: some DIY stuff can actually cost a lot more than hiring someone else to create it.
  • Share the board with anyone helping you plan your wedding – your best friend, your mom, and your visual vendors: planner, coordinator, florist, cake designer, photographer, etc.
  • Periodically go through and remove non-relevant ideas, especially when you really hone in on what you’re envisioning.

And our final and top tip? We think Lexie said it best:

“The part that I think can get super overwhelming are all the tiny details and ideas to make your wedding more “fun” or “unique” which honestly now are becoming so common that lots of things are not unique at all anymore! And you know what is fun?? Your friends and family! They will have fun no matter what just celebrating you!”

Your wedding will be beautiful – no matter what. As much as we love pretty details, at the end of the day:

it’s about your marriage, not the wedding.
