Our Latest Netflix Obsessions

October 19, 2015

Something some of you may not know is we don’t watch TV. We canceled our cable television a couple of years ago, because we realized that we never really sat down and watched anything – we would watch stuff on-demand, or we’d have the TV on in the background for noise, or we’d watch movie marathons on ABC Family (especially around Halloween and Christmas, which is really the only time we get an ounce of nostalgia for cable) … but, it was rare for us to go okay, this show is on at 8pm so we HAVE to sit down and watch it!

It just didn’t happen.

So we decided to save $100 a month and just get Netflix, and we figured whatever else we wanted to watch that wasn’t on Netflix we could watch directly on the network’s websites (or on Coke and Popcorn … who else LOVES that website!?).

We thought it would be fun to share our Top 5 Netflix obsessions every month … and without further adieu, here we go!

1.) Person of Interest

netflix obsessions, person of interest

Starring Jim Caviezel (the guy who played Jesus in The Passion) and Michael Emerson (remember creepy Ben from Lost?!), this is an action drama revolving around the moral implications of privacy rights. Michael Emerson’s character, Harold Finch, created the ‘Machine’ – which taps into people’s phone calls, emails, video feeds – you name it, and it’s watching and listening in an attempt to prevent terrorists from attacking, and any threats to lives are deemed relevant and irrelevant … All the irrelevant numbers are just every day folks, and the Machine gives their ‘numbers’ to Finch, who then gives them to Mr. Reese (Jim Caviezel) in order to save them (did we forget to mention Mr. Reese was a former CIA operator and a complete badass?!).

It sounds complicated – and it is – but it’s so good. We just finished the 3rd season last week and we’re already jonesing for more!

2.) Hawaii Five-O

This isn’t your Grandpa’s Five-O, guys – it’s fresh, it’s explosive and the characters are completely awesome. Starring Scott Caan, Alex O’Laughlin and Daniel Dae Kim (remember Jin from Lost?), this new take on Five-O follows the lives of a special, elite group of cops that have been granted an unlimited budget and ‘get out of jail free cards’ to do what needs to be done to protect Hawaii. This show has a LOT of action but it’s also a lot of laughs and heart, and a few “what the…?!” moments. Plus, hello – it’s HAWAII so it’s got beautiful scenery, too.

Bonus: Netflix just added the fifth season and now that we’ve finished up Person of Interest, now we’re going to catch up with our favorite cops in Hawaii!

3.) American Pie

netflix addictions, american pie

Yeah, the movie with Jim, Stifler, Michelle and the rest of the gang. We’ve all seen it a thousand times, but they just added it to the Netflix cue and it’s funnier now than it was when we were in high school.

4.) Last Man Standing

last man standing

Seriously one of the funniest sitcoms we’ve ever watched because we’re sure the main character loosely based on Ashley’s dad. Starring Tim Allen, there are five seasons available on Netflix and each episode just gets better and better. Tim Allen plays Mike Baxter – a man’s man who owns a sporting good store in Colorado, and goes home to a house filled with estrogen (his wife and their three daughters) and after his wife goes back to work after being a stay-at-home mom for so many years, Mike has to take on more at home. We’re not sure if the show is just genuinely hysterical, or because we can’t help but think of Ashley’s dad every time Tim Allen’s character says or does pretty much anything.

5.) Baby Daddy

This is one of those hidden-gem shows that came on to ABC Family a few years ago when we still had cable, but we just never sat down to watch it so we’re really grateful that it’s on Netflix now. Following a one-night stand, 20-something bartender, Ben (played by Jean-Luc Bilodaeu), ends up with a baby on his doorstep about a year later. He moves in with his best friend Tucker and his pro-hockey player brother Danny, and together these three guys raise baby Emma. Then Ben’s mom and best friend Riley get involved … and chaos/hilarity ensues. It’s really one of the funniest TV shows, with great one-liners and a cool storyline. We are obsessed!!

We love netflix! We did this same no-cable-streaming-only move a few years ago but then moved somewhere without any basic channels and missed the ability to have news/etc..so we are back. Love these suggestions- I am unfamiliar with most of them and will have to check them out!

  4. Misty says:

I’d the same thing here, but we have Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime video. With those three, we get about everything we could ever want 😉
